Welcome to
FirstSteps School of Dance

FirstSteps, where we spread the joy of dance and nurture an environment where all our students can fulfil their potential.

At FirstSteps learning ballet and other dance styles give young people and adults the ability to move with poise and confidence. Students will develop dance technique; discover a means of self expression and cultivate social skills. These skills are transferable to other activities such as school, university and work-life.

In light of safeguarding young people, our staff are qualified Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Teachers and assistants are all DBS checked, and fulfil annual Continuing Professional Development requirements (CPD). FirstSteps School of Dance is a fully inclusive school, supporting equality and diversity, please see our EDI Statement on the Information Page. Our family run school is welcoming, structured and has a sympathetic approach to the needs of every student.

“You run a wonderful dance school, but the impact is greater than the dance.”

Our school provides ballet training from Pre-School through the grades to vocational level, which includes pointe work training.

RAD syllabus classes, include Ballet, Free Movement and Character, and their are opportunities for all ages to participate in workshops and performances. Our Conditioning Classes are a beneficial addition to the timetable and can be taken alongside regular ballet training. We offer Adult Ballet Classes for beginners and those who are more advanced.

FirstSteps School of Dance offers Royal Academy of Dance Examinations which give students a goal to strive for. A high point of every term is ‘Parents Watching Day’ when we show our term’s work to family and friends. This is essential for keeping in touch with our parents.

Our Story

FirstSteps School of Dance was founded in 2003 by mother and daughter team, Sue and Kit Dickinson. Coming from very different backgrounds, Sue has an academic training in human movement psychology, while Kit was a professional ballet dancer. By 2002, both had qualified as Royal Academy of Dance teachers and decided to join forces.
As a family-managed school, our ethos is to spread the joy of dance and create an environment where every student can fulfil their potential.
